Importance of Goal Setting

Did you know the number one reason for not attaining goals is not having clearly defined written goals?

Before you start you should have clearly defined goals of what you’d like to accomplish and don’t forget to put these goals in writing. Make sure the goals you are setting are attainable and make a commitment to do everything in your power to attain those goals.

If you don’t have clearly defined goals then it’s virtually impossible to measure your performance. Don’t just think about what you want, write it down and plan on how to attain this goal. Visualize your goal. If your goal is to lose 20lbs and to get tone then visualize how you want to look. Action without planning is the number one reason for failure.

What Gets Measured Gets Done :

If you don’t measure performance you’ll lose sight of your goals. This is also important because if you’re not constantly monitoring your performance how will you know if you need to adjust your actions to improve your results.

You can compare attaining goals with being the captain of a ship. A captain knows where he wants to be and he sets his coordinates to get there but along the way he constantly has to change directions because wind and currents veer him of course. Now even though his ship is constantly going off course, he doesn’t just give up; he adjusts his direction and keeps moving forward until he arrives at his target. The same goes for dieting; if you measure your performance and you’re not getting the results you want, don’t give up, just make whatever adjustment is necessary and keep moving toward you goal.

Most importantly, if you find yourself in a situation where, for example, you can’t resist a delicious dessert and you give in to temptation, don’t just give up on your diet. Review where you are, make the necessary adjustments to make up for the slight deviation and keep going towards that goal. We all have slip ups but the important thing is to not lose sight of where you want to be.

Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today. For some reason when most of us slip up or cheat we tell ourselves “I’ll start again Tomorrow” or even worse “I’ll start again on Monday” but don’t allow yourself to fall in this trap because if you do you’ll spend the rest of your day or weekend sabotaging your goal. Instead if this happens get right back on track, like a ship captain, adjust your coordinates and keep moving towards your target.
